DevOps Architect (AWS)

Role Summary
The DevOps Architect is responsible for defining, governing, and evolving the end‑to‑end DevOps and cloud delivery architecture across AWS.
This role owns the target-state design for CI/CD pipelines, cloud guardrails, environment patterns, and operational standards, ensuring that delivery at scale remains secure, compliant, repeatable, and cost‑effective.
Unlike an engineering execution role, the DevOps Architect sets direction, standards, and reference architectures, enabling multiple teams to deliver consistently while meeting regulatory, operational, and business requirements.
Key Responsibilities
DevOps & Cloud Architecture
Define and maintain the target DevOps architecture across AWS, covering CI/CD, infrastructure provisioning, environment lifecycle, and operations.
Own reference architectures, patterns, and blueprints for application and infrastructure delivery.
Ensure architectural decisions align with cloud strategy, security posture, and operational maturity goals.
CI/CD Strategy & Governance
Define enterprise CI/CD standards, with Jenkins as a core platform, including pipeline structure, controls, approvals, and promotion models.
Establish guardrails within pipelines to enforce security, compliance, and operational requirements by design.
Review and approve deviations from standard pipelines and delivery patterns.
Guardrails, Security & Compliance
Define and evolve cloud guardrails across identity, networking, logging, encryption, monitoring, and policy enforcement.
Partner with security, risk, and audit teams to ensure DevOps and cloud platforms meet regulatory and audit expectations.
Ensure compliance is embedded into architecture and automation, not retrofitted.
Platform Reliability & Operations
Define architectural standards for resilience, observability, and disaster recovery.
Ensure platforms are designed for operability at scale, including support, incident management, and recovery processes.
Provide architectural oversight for production incidents and major platform changes.
Standardisation & Enablement
Drive standardisation across teams, reducing bespoke solutions and operational risk.
Enable engineering teams through clear patterns, documentation, and reference implementations.
Act as a senior technical authority and mentor for DevOps and platform engineers.
Cost & Sustainability (FinOps Alignment)
Embed cost awareness and optimisation principles into platform and pipeline designs.
Partner with FinOps stakeholders to ensure architectures support cost transparency and control.
Required Qualifications & Experience
Essential
8–12 years’ experience in DevOps, SRE, or cloud platform engineering, including architectural responsibility.
Deep expertise in AWS architecture, including multi‑account strategies, networking, IAM, and security.
Strong experience designing and governing Jenkins‑based CI/CD platforms at enterprise scale.
Proven experience defining and enforcing cloud guardrails and governance models.
Experience operating in regulated, audit‑sensitive environments.
Ability to influence and guide teams without direct line management.
Desirable
Experience working in a Cloud Centre of Excellence (CCoE) or platform organisation.
Exposure to FinOps, cost optimisation, and large‑scale cloud financial governance.
Strong documentation and architectural communication skills.
